Clinical Expertise and Academic Leadership
Dr. S. Murugusundram is an interventional dermatologist, dermatosurgeon and dermato-trichologist. He is the Founder and Medical Director of Chennai Skin Foundation & Yesudian Research Institute.
He completed his medical education at Kilpauk Medical College and pursued postgraduate training in dermatology at Madras Medical College. His clinical approach is built on systematic evaluation, evidence-based diagnosis, appropriate treatment selection and the responsible use of evolving dermatological technologies.
His areas of professional interest include medical dermatology, dermatosurgery, hair and scalp disorders, vitiligo, clinical research and dermatology education.
A Vision for Comprehensive Dermatological Care
Dr. Murugusundram envisioned an institutional centre dedicated to skin, hair and nail health, built upon the principles of his mentor, Prof. Patrick Yesudian.
This vision led to the establishment of Chennai Skin Foundation & Yesudian Research Institute on 7 March 2012. The institute was created to bring diagnostic services, advanced treatment, clinical research, professional training and patient education together within one specialised centre.
Today, the institute continues to follow a patient-centred and academically driven approach to dermatological care.
Contribution to Hair and Trichology Research
Dr. Murugusundram has contributed extensively to the field of hair and scalp disorders. He is the Founder Secretary of the Hair Research Society of India and the Founder and Executive Editor of the International Journal of Trichology.
His work has supported greater academic engagement, scientific discussion and professional education in trichology. He has also contributed to conferences, workshops, lectures and publications focused on clinical hair disorders and their treatment.
Vitiligo Education and Awareness
As the Founder of the Vitiligo Academy of India, Dr. Murugusundram has worked to improve understanding of vitiligo and address the misconceptions and social stigma associated with the condition.
His work emphasises that vitiligo requires scientific understanding, compassionate communication and appropriate dermatological care. Patient and public education remain important parts of his approach.
Research and Professional Education
Dr. Murugusundram has maintained a strong interest in clinical research and emerging therapeutic approaches. His academic work has included clinical trials, evaluation of new treatments, research involving stem cells, professional lectures, workshops and dermatology publications.
He has also supported the training of nurses, postgraduate students and practising doctors through the academic and clinical facilities available at the institute.
Patient and Community Education
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Murugusundram has been actively involved in programmes intended to improve public understanding of skin diseases.
These initiatives have addressed conditions such as vitiligo, psoriasis and leprosy while working to correct myths and reduce stigma. He also introduced Thol Malar, a Tamil publication created to educate the public about dermatological conditions in an accessible language.
Expanding Access to Dermatological Care
Dr. Murugusundram has organised skin camps and community initiatives in rural areas to help underserved patients access dermatological consultation and treatment.
His work reflects a commitment to making specialist care available beyond major clinical settings, particularly for patients who may face financial or geographical barriers.

Through Chennai Skin Foundation & Yesudian Research Institute, Dr. Murugusundram continues to bring together clinical care, research, education and community service.
His professional journey is guided by a clear purpose: to improve scientific understanding, challenge misinformation, advance dermatology education and provide responsible, compassionate care for people affected by skin, hair and nail disorders.
